Your Lovely Garden is a Marlow-based garden and landscape design studio founded by Tania Taylor in 2014. Specialising in residential gardens of all sizes – from characterful town gardens to expansive country schemes – Tania’s approach is rooted in collaboration and sustainability, with a particular depth of knowledge in how plants interact with each other and their environment. The Garden Design Process
A successful garden is the result of close collaboration between the designer, landscaper and client. While your garden designer develops the creative vision, Thames Valley Landscapes works alongside them as a trusted landscaping partner, to help turn the design into a practical, beautifully finished garden. From the initial brief through to completion, clear communication between everyone ensures the project stays on track.
The process begins with a consultation to understand how you want to use your garden, your style, aspirations and budget. Your designer will then survey the site and develop the initial concept, bringing together the proposed layout, planting, materials and key features. At this stage, early costings can also help shape the design and ensure it remains realistic for the project.
Your designer refines the concept into a fully detailed plan, complete with 3D visuals, planting plans and material specifications, so you know exactly what to expect before a spade goes in the ground.
Once the design is signed off, we step in as your landscaping contractor, pricing and planning the project build to your designer’s exact specification. We manage the build day-to-day, keeping in regular contact with your designer through site visits and updates so the finished garden stays true to their vision.
As the landscaping works near completion, we carry out a final walkthrough with your designer to check every detail against the design, making sure that everything has been delivered to the required standard. Any final snagging is addressed before the project is signed off and handed over, leaving you with a finished garden that is ready to enjoy.

A garden designer assesses your outdoor space, listens to your brief and creates a considered design that balances beauty, practicality and budget. This typically includes a measured survey, concept drawings, developed design plans, a planting scheme and a specification document that allows contractors to price and build the project accurately. Many designers also oversee the build – visiting site regularly to ensure the design is being executed as intended.
Start with their portfolio – look for projects that reflect the style, scale and budget of what you have in mind. Beyond that, consider their communication style, how clearly they explain their process and fees, and whether they have experience working with landscaping contractors on buildable, specification-led schemes. Professional membership of the Society of Garden Designers (SGD) or the Association of Professional Landscapers (APL) is a useful indicator of standards. Personal recommendation from a trusted contractor is also worth its weight.
Before appointing a designer, it is worth asking: Can I see examples of projects similar to mine in scale and style? What does your design process involve and what will I receive at the end of it? How do you work with landscaping contractors during the build? What are your fees and how are they structured? Do you offer a site visit during construction? How long will the design process take? The answers will tell you a great deal about how the relationship will work and whether the designer is the right fit for your project.
