Overview
When a family in Winnersh completed the redevelopment of their home, they were ready to transform the surrounding landscape to match. Working from a design by Andy Stedman Garden Design, our role was to bring the vision to life, creating a modern, practical outdoor space that complemented the property and met the needs of a busy young family.
Following a competitive tender process, we were awarded the project and began work just before Christmas 2025. Despite challenging winter conditions, the project was completed on time and within budget in mid-April 2026.
The challenge
The property required a complete landscape transformation.
At the rear, the garden consisted of an unkempt lawn stretching from boundary to boundary, with overgrown hedges and weeds dominating the perimeter.
At the front, mature overgrowth, large expanses of ageing concrete parking, and fragmented lawn areas left the entrance feeling tired and underused.
The brief was clear:
- Create a contemporary, family-friendly rear garden with spaces for entertaining and children’s play.
- Maximise the usability and kerb appeal of the front garden.
- Deliver a high-quality finish while maintaining a low-maintenance planting scheme.
Our approach
The project was carefully phased to ensure each element was built on solid foundations.
The first stage involved clearing both the front and rear gardens, removing existing vegetation, fencing and hard landscaping to create a blank canvas. Groundworks included installing ducting for electrical services, concrete footings for walls, and robust sub-bases for paving, decking and artificial grass.
Once the structural landscaping was complete, we prepared the planting areas by importing quality topsoil and mushroom compost before carrying out the planting scheme.
Collaboration
Electrical installation was delivered in partnership with Simon and Alex at Mace Electrical, who provided power and lighting throughout the garden, bringing both the entertaining areas and planting beds to life after dark.
The rear garden
The rear garden was designed to provide a seamless connection between the house and garden while remaining practical for a young family with football-mad children.
A premium artificial lawn provides a durable, year-round play space with minimal maintenance requirements. Adjacent to the house, Millboard composite decking creates an inviting entertaining area beneath a Pergolux aluminium pergola, complete with integrated lighting and heating, allowing the family to enjoy the space throughout the seasons.
Large-format porcelain paving with a contemporary polished concrete finish ties the outdoor spaces together, while new boundary fencing provides privacy and a clean architectural backdrop.
Raised brick planters and feature walls introduce structure and depth across what was previously a predominantly flat garden, creating visual interest without compromising openness.
The planting palette combines evergreen structure with seasonal colour, delivering an attractive landscape that remains easy to maintain throughout the year.
The front garden
At the front of the property, the focus was on improving both functionality and first impressions.
Overgrown boundaries were cleared before excavating for a new driveway. Granite sett edging defines the transition between driveway, lawn and planting beds, creating crisp, elegant lines throughout.
New boundary fencing was installed to the sides of the property. While a traditional post-and-rail fence paired with a newly planted Griselinia hedge creates a welcoming and attractive appearance.
A stabilised gravel driveway now provides generous parking and ample turning space for multiple family vehicles. The carefully positioned planting around the entrance softens the architecture and enhances the home’s kerb appeal.
The result
The completed project represents a remarkable transformation, turning two tired, underused outdoor spaces into beautiful, practical spaces that complement the newly renovated home.
Throughout the build, close collaboration with the clients allowed several practical refinements to be incorporated, ensuring the finished garden worked perfectly for their day-to-day family life.
Despite difficult winter weather, Tom and the team delivered the project on schedule and within budget, producing a garden and driveway that everyone involved is immensely proud of—and, most importantly, one that our clients were absolutely delighted with.
